Failure is a common occurrence in entrepreneurial ventures. Multiple studies have examined why ventures fail and how learning from the experience impacts entrepreneurs and their subsequent ventures. Our study, however, takes the approach of examining the specific “what” that is learned from a failure through the lived experience of serial entrepreneurs. We will discuss how we approached this research and share the four themes of learning that we identified to help understand the black box of failure in the entrepreneurial venture context.
